The short answer
No. A diode laser cannot cut clear or light-colored acrylic. A diode produces a blue light beam, and clear acrylic lets that light pass straight through, so the beam never deposits the energy it needs to melt and cut the material. You can run the job, but you will get a faint line or nothing at all. This is not a power problem you can solve by slowing down or adding passes. No diode, at any wattage, cuts clear acrylic.
What a diode can do with acrylic
Diodes are not useless with acrylic, just limited to dark colors. Black and other dark cast acrylic absorbs the blue beam, so a strong diode cuts and engraves it well. The catch is that the acrylic has to be dark; clear, frosted, white, and pastel sheets are all out. If your designs live happily in black acrylic, a capable diode like the xTool S1 will serve you well and save you money. The moment a customer asks for a clear sign, though, you are stuck.
What you actually need for clear acrylic
Clear and all-color acrylic needs a CO2 laser. The infrared beam a CO2 produces is absorbed by acrylic regardless of color, so it cuts clean edges in clear, frosted, and pastel sheets. For most makers the xTool P2S is the core CO2 machine that covers clear acrylic plus wood and the rest. If budget and space are tight, the compact FLUX Beamo is the most affordable way into CO2. There is no sub-$1,000 CO2 laser, so this is the realistic entry point for clear work.
Not sure which fits your work?
If you are weighing whether you can live within a diode's limits or truly need CO2, do not guess. The free Laser Comparison Tool lets you line up the machines above side by side, including which ones cut clear acrylic, and the free Laser Buying Guide asks what you want to make and points you to the right laser type.
Get clean cuts every time
Once you have the right machine, dialing in settings is the next hurdle. Silhouette U has tested laser settings, full tutorials, and same-day 1:1 support for xTool, CO2, and diode machines, so you spend less time testing on scrap and more time selling finished work. It is all included with any Silhouette U membership, with plans starting at $14.99/month.
