Why HTV Projects Are So Easy to Underprice

Most HTV crafters calculate their cost by looking at the price of the vinyl sheet and stopping there. But that's only part of the story. The real cost of an HTV project includes your weeding time, your pressing time, and — if you're working with multiple colors — a completely separate cut, weed, and press cycle for every single layer.

A 3-color design on 20 shirts isn't just 20 shirts. It's 60 separate weeding sessions. Factor in your labor at even a modest hourly rate and the numbers change fast. This calculator does that math for you so you're never leaving money on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your true HTV cost includes three things: material (the vinyl itself), labor (cutting, weeding, and pressing time), and overhead. The vinyl sheet is usually the smallest part — especially on multi-color designs where every color adds a full extra round of cutting and weeding. This calculator factors in all three so your pricing reflects your actual time investment.
More than most people realize. A simple single-color design on a standard shirt might take 3–5 minutes to weed. A complex 3-color design can easily take 20–30 minutes per item once you account for each separate layer. At $20/hour that's an extra $6–$10 in labor per shirt that most crafters never charge for. Always include weeding time in your pricing — your time is not free.
If you're doing multi-color designs, fine detail work, or large quantities, DTF transfers are worth seriously considering. There's no weeding, no layering, and no separate press cycle per color — you just press and you're done. The calculator shows you a DTF cost comparison so you can decide which method actually makes more sense for each job. Silhouette U members also get a discount on So Fontsy DTF transfers if you want to skip the cutting process entirely.
EasyWeed is the standard go-to for most projects — it works on cotton, polyester, and most blends and is the easiest to weed. EasyWeed Stretch is designed for athletic and performance fabrics like spandex and nylon where regular HTV would crack with movement. Glitter is a specialty material that adds sparkle but is significantly harder and slower to weed, which is why the calculator applies a higher labor multiplier when you select it. All three pricing figures in this calculator are based on current dealer pricing at Swing Design — not box store pricing, which runs 2–4× higher.
