How to Price DTF Transfers So You Actually Make Money

Most crafters price DTF transfers by guessing - here's how to price for profit.

How to Price DTF Transfers So You Actually Make Money

If you've ever sold a stack of DTF transfers and wondered why there was barely any profit left, you're not alone. Most crafters price DTF the same way they price everything else: a quick guess based on the size of the design. But DTF has its own cost structure - ink, film, powder, and labor - and skipping any one of them quietly eats your margin. Here's how to price DTF transfers so the work is actually worth your time.

The four costs in every DTF transfer

A DTF transfer isn't just ink on film. Every print pulls from four buckets: the CMYK ink for color, the white ink underbase that makes colors show on dark fabric, the film you print on, and the adhesive powder that bonds the design to the garment. Leave any one of these out of your pricing and you're working for less than you think.

The white underbase is where margins disappear

Color ink is predictable. White ink isn't. DTF lays down a heavy white underbase on most prints, and on a dark or detailed design that white layer can use as much ink as all the colors combined. Crafters who price off color ink alone consistently underprice, because the underbase is the single biggest variable in your cost per transfer.

Don't forget the labor

Even though DTF skips the weeding and layering that HTV demands, your time still counts. Printing, powdering, curing, and pressing all take minutes that add up across an order. A transfer that costs you $0.80 in materials but four minutes of hands-on time is not an $0.80 transfer. Build your hourly rate into every quote.
