How to Save and Export Files from Silhouette Studio (SVG, PNG, JPEG, PDF)

Why you can't find the export option — and what to do about it

How to save and export files from Silhouette Studio

If you've ever tried to export a file from Silhouette Studio and couldn't find the option — or clicked Save As and only saw one file type — you're not missing something. There's a reason this is one of the most searched questions about Silhouette Studio, and it comes down to one thing most tutorials skip over entirely.

The Business Edition requirement

Silhouette Studio has four software versions: Basic (free), Designer Edition, Designer Edition+, and Business Edition. The ability to save or export as SVG, PNG, JPEG, or PDF is locked behind Business Edition — a one-time paid upgrade that typically runs $50–70.If you have Basic, Designer Edition, or Designer Edition+, your only native save option is the proprietary .studio file format, which only opens in Silhouette Studio. That's why you can't find the export option — it's not there for your version. This matters a lot if you're trying to share files with customers, use your designs in other software, sell cut files, or print your design outside of Silhouette Studio. All of those workflows require Business Edition.

The workaround if you don't have Business Edition

There is one option available on all software versions: Print to PDF. Instead of exporting a PDF file, you go to File → Print, and then choose a PDF printer (like Save as PDF on Mac, or Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows) as your destination. This creates a PDF of your design without needing Business Edition. It's not ideal for everything — the PDF won't have the same crispness as a true export — but it works as a workaround for basic needs.

Which file type should you use?

If you have Business Edition, here's when to use each format. SVG is a vector file — it scales to any size without losing quality, which makes it the right choice for cut files, files you're selling, or anything a customer will resize. If someone asks for a cut file, they want an SVG.

PNG is a raster (pixel-based) image, which means it has a fixed resolution. The key advantage of PNG is that it supports transparent backgrounds — so if you export a design as a PNG, the background can be clear instead of white. This is essential for mockups, overlays, and sublimation design files. JPEG doesn't support transparency, so if a clear background matters, PNG is always the right choice.

JPEG is best for photos or designs with lots of color gradients where file size matters more than a transparent background. For most Silhouette design work, PNG is more useful than JPEG.

PDF is useful when you need a print-ready file — sending a design to a print shop, creating a printable download, or sharing something that needs to look exactly right at a specific size.

How to export in Silhouette Studio (Business Edition)

To save a file from Silhouette Studio, go to File → Save As, and you'll see the full list of file type options in the dropdown. Select the format you need, choose where to save it, and click Save. For PNG with a transparent background, make sure your design doesn't have a background rectangle or fill — only the design itself should be on the work area, and the background setting in your page setup should be set to transparent.
