How to Move Silhouette Studio to a New Computer

Moving Silhouette Studio to a new computer is one of those tasks that sounds simple but has a few critical steps most people miss - and skipping one can mean losing your entire design library or ending up with a corrupted installation on your new machine.

The process is different depending on whether you're on a PC or Mac, and it matters whether you're moving to a completely new computer or just reinstalling after a hard drive wipe. In both cases, the order of operations matters.

You need to export your library from your old computer before uninstalling, transfer it correctly, then reinstall Silhouette Studio fresh on the new machine and re-import everything. Not if you follow the right steps. Your design library is stored locally on your computer, so it won't automatically transfer — you need to manually export it before switching machines. The checklist below walks you through exactly how to do this on both PC and Mac so nothing gets left behind.

You don't need to uninstall from your old computer first, but you do need to download and install a fresh copy of Silhouette Studio on your new machine. Silhouette Studio is free to download from the Silhouette America website. Once installed, you can re-import your library from the backup you created on your old computer.

The library file location is different on each platform, which is why the steps aren't identical. On a PC, your library is stored in a specific AppData folder; on a Mac it's in the Application Support folder. The checklist includes separate step-by-step instructions for both so you're following the right path for your system.
